Sprogs & drugs & rock n roll

Following the CIVL Plenary in February, there is a requirement that all pilots competing in the FAI World HG Championships in Laragne, must have their sprog settings checked before they will be able to fly the first competition task.  The FAI is also warning pilots to be prepared for anti-doping testing which could take place at any international competitions.

The CIVL-appointed Working Group on Pitch Stability is working on the logistics of how sprog setting measurements will be done before and during the competition.  They are also talking to manufacturers on initial settings and certification bodies on tolerances.  The outcome, once approved, will be published as an addendum to the Local Regulations.  Watch this space!
Anti-doping
France, like many other nations, is signed up to the WADA treaty on anti-doping testing.  Recent championships in many sports in France have been paid a visit by the WADA people.  This is arranged by the French Government in conjunction with the FFVL.  As organisers, of course, we have to comply with the procedure.
Our advice: BE PREPARED!
We should have 24 hours notice that testing will take place, but pilots must remember they could be tested for drugs at any time during the competition. Competitors must avoid using any of the substances and methods listed in the WADA Prohibited Substances list. If you have to take one of the prohibited substances for medical reasons, a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) is required in accordance with FAI Anti-Doping Rules. 
Unfortunately, alcohol is on the list.  The rules do not prevent pilots from having a cool beer in the evening after flying, but only once they have checked with event organisers that they will not be subjected to anti-doping controls that day. Alcohol must have been eliminated from the body by the time pilots are ready to fly the following morning, so quantities consumed must be small.
Luckily, Laragne is at the heart of the apple growing region of France.  Healthy, local apple juice (as well as other soft drinks) will always be available for pilots at the official receptions and social events!
Rock on
For further information on the social side of the championships, click on the Schedule tab on the left hands side of the page.  In addition to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the local Organisers are planning a warm welcome to all pilots, team leaders and helpers.  Plenty of music evenings, including local rock bands, plus there are summer celebrations and weekend festivals.  For the gourmets, there will be several opportunities to sample regional food specialties.

24 nations sign up for Hang Gliding Pre-Worlds

Laragne is going to be a popular venue for hang glider pilots this summer! Registration for the 2008 Chabre Hang Gliding Pre-Worlds is now complete, with 120 pilots signed up from 24 countries.
